NEST Program

Neurodiversity

This program is designed to support autistic learners in an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom, where they collaborate with general education students. The classroom is co-led by a special education teacher and a general education teacher, fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment. This approach ensures that all students receive the academic support they need while engaging in meaningful interactions with their peers. The NEST ICT model emphasizes social integration and academic growth, promoting a sense of belonging and community for all students. Although the classroom does not have a dedicated paraprofessional, the teachers work closely together to provide individualized attention and accommodations, ensuring a supportive and inclusive educational experience for every student.

Curriculum & Social-Emotional Supports

NEST classes here at Seth Low follow the New York State Learning Standards and the same curriculum used in all DOE schools. Nest teachers are trained in specialized teaching strategies for students with autism, including a special social curriculum called Social Development Intervention (SDI) developed by NYU. SDI is an evidence-based program that supports social-emotional development.

At Seth Low, we offer two NEST classes per grade level, providing students with a structured and inclusive learning environment that promotes academic success and social development. Key features of the program include:

  • Consistent Routines: Predictable routines are implemented throughout each class and across the school to support student comfort and stability.
  • Flexible Seating: Each classroom is equipped with flexible seating options to accommodate diverse learning styles and encourage engagement.
  • Break Areas: Designated break areas are available in every classroom, offering students the opportunity to self-regulate and recharge as needed.
  • Social Development Intervention (SDI):
Grades 6 & 7: SDI sessions occur three times per week.
Grade 8: SDI sessions occur twice per week.
  • Access to Social Worker Support: NEST students have a dedicated social worker available to assist with any challenges or situations that may arise throughout the school day.
  • Sensory Room: A dedicated sensory room is available for students who need a space to self-regulate and engage in sensory activities, promoting focus and relaxation.
  • Quiet Space During Lunch: NEST students are provided with a calm, quiet space during lunch periods to ensure a peaceful and supportive environment.

Parents will receive weekly newsletters with important information pertaining their child, as well as opportunities for parent workshops throughout the school year.
