Mathematics
In our math program, we focus on building a strong foundation of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Using a hands-on, interactive approach, students explore mathematical concepts through real-world applications and collaborative activities. By engaging in meaningful math investigations, students develop a deeper understanding of key concepts and are encouraged to see how math connects to their everyday lives. This approach helps foster both confidence and curiosity in math, preparing students for future challenges.

Required Research Projects
Grade 6
Project 1: Shopping at the Grocery Store
For this project, students will explore grocery store items. They will choose two packaged items, list their costs, calculate the unit rates, and determine which offers the better buy. A table will be created to illustrate their findings. Next, students will select one item for further analysis, developing a cost table for different quantities and graphing the results. Finally, they will read a story related to their findings and answer comprehension questions. This project aims to enhance their math skills and promote smart consumer choices.
Grade 7
Project 1: Vacationing With a Friend
For this project, students will plan a five-day vacation for themselves and a friend, with a total budget of $10,000. They will first read an article and respond to questions to sharpen their critical thinking skills, then apply that knowledge in the second part by researching and organizing their trip details. Students will choose a destination, research travel options including airfare, hotel accommodations, and transportation, and plan daily activities for the trip. They will calculate the total costs and determine each person's share of the expenses. In the final part, students will present their vacation plans using Google Slides or Docs, showcasing their research, budget breakdown, and reflection on the project. This project encourages students to practice research, budgeting, and presentation skills, all while learning how to manage money effectively in real-life scenarios.
Grade 8
Project 1: Real-World Problem Solving - Applying Equations with Variables on Both Sides
In this project, students will apply their understanding of equations with variables on both sides to solve real-world problems. They will work through three different word problems that require them to identify variables, set up and solve equations, and check their solutions. Problems range from comparing costs of services, like plane rentals or boat rentals, to understanding temperature changes over time, and even analyzing errors in equations. Students will not only solve the problems, but also explain their reasoning in a written reflection, using math vocabulary and identifying common misconceptions. The goal is for students to gain confidence in applying algebraic concepts to everyday situations while sharpening their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
